Silver Medallion Patrol Captain (SMPC)

This course aims to equip participants with the skills and knowledge required to confidently manage a beach and a patrol as a Surf Life Saving Patrol Captain.

Note - Patrol Captains at North Cottesloe SLSC are appointed by the Chair of Lifesaving (or their authorised delegate). The SMPC award does not automatically grant any position at North Cottesloe SLSC.

Standard SMPC Course:

Prerequisites:

  • Minimum 17 years of age

  • Financial member of a Surf Life Saving Club

  • Have 2 years of patrolling experience

  • Proficient in Bronze Medallion

  • Course length is estimated at about 8-10 hours (dependent on group size and prior knowledge/abilities). This includes practical sessions and the assessment.

    The course is run with participants from multiple Surf Clubs.

SMPC #1: 31 August 2024 @ 08:00-16:00 - COMPLETE

SMPC #2: 21 September 2024 @ 08:00-16:00 - COMPLETE

SMPC #3: 12 October 2024 @ 08:00-16:00 - COMPLETE

SMPC #4: 22 February 2025 @ 08:00-16:00

SMPC Bridging Course (experienced):

This version of the SMPC course is available for members who have 2+ years experience as a Patrol Captain (or equivalent) including:

  1. a Patrol Captain but yet to obtain this SLSA award (i.e. hold the superceded SMBBM award)

  2. acting as a Patrol Captain (must have a reference from their supervising patrol captain or Chair of Lifesaving)

  3. a Vice Patrol Captain (must have a reference from their supervising patrol captain or Chair of Lifesaving)

  4. a Beach Lifeguard.

Given the above experience, the SMPC is delivered in an abbreviated one-day course with some knowledge presumed and will involve:

  1. Mandatory completion of 7 online modules and their assessment before the course. Please note  ‘No certificate no go’ as the day is based on the premise everyone participating is familiar with the course content.

  2. First 2 – 3 hours (depending on group size) reinforcing (applying) online modules via interactive discussion and tabletop scenarios.

  3. On the beach and around the club scenarios working as a patrol with PC and VPC rotating these roles. Each participant will take the role of Patrol Captain and lead their team through a critical incident. All participants should be familiar with setting up a patrol; first aid and emergency resources as well as other surf lifesaving resources available to a patrol; radio operation

  4. Debrief. Course concludes.

Learning outcomes

  • know the role and responsibilities of a patrol captain

  • know how to find and when to refer to organisational documents and policies

  • access and record information relevant to your patrol

  • apply the principles of effective leadership to motivate and engage team members

  • apply leadership techniques to manage multiple incidents as a patrol captain

  • effectively communicate in difficult situations, including managing inappropriate public behaviour

  • complete a surf risk assessment using Surf Risk Rating in the Operations app

  • lead patrol set up and pack down, and manage the beach during patrol

  • know how to set up the beach in special circumstances

  • action operational risk and hazard management

  • effectively manage a patrol team including the delegation of operational tasks

  • conduct effective briefing and de-briefing, including follow-up

  • coordinate the response to minor and major incidents including working with multi-agencies

Assessment

Assessment is through demonstration, presentation and application of all elements of competency in the work-place.

Participants will be required to complete activities that may include role-plays, oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations and performing scenarios.
