Our dedicated Education team put in the time to engage, train and requalify our members so that we can meet the SLS standard.

North Cott SLSC prides itself in training Surf Rescue Certificate and Bronze Medallion courses to a high standard. In addition to these courses, there are a number of Higher Awards that members can gain to improve their skills and patrol position within surf life saving.

Members can access their eLearning via the SLSA Member Portal.

Q: What is the difference between a Pool Bronze and a SLS Bronze Medallion?
A: The Pool Bronze is run by Royal Lifesaving Australia and is a two day course (14 contact hours) whereas the Bronze Medallion Course is over a 6 day or 6 week period and amounts to approximately 40 contact hours. Whilst the names are similar the course content is quite different.

Q: I did my Bronze Medallion at a pool or through another organisation. Do I need to do the course again?
A: You will still need to complete the SLS Bronze Medallion. Unfortunately, Bronze Medallions from organisations other than SLSA affiliated Surf Life Saving Clubs do not fulfil surf life saving requirements.

Q: I am transferring from another SLS Club and already have my Bronze Medallion. Do I need to do the course again?
A: No, if you already have your SLS Bronze Medallion that you gained at a Surf Club in Australia and if it is still proficient (ie not expired) then you do not need to do the course again, you can transfer over to North Cott and sit the Skills Maintenance Check (Requal) in October-November of each year.

Q: My Bronze expired less than 3 years ago. Do I need to do the course again?
A: No, if you have previously completed the SLS Bronze Medallion that you gained at a Surf Club in Australia and if it is has not lapsed for more than 3 years then you do not need to do the course again, you can transfer over to North Cott and sit the Skills Maintenance (Requal).

Q: My Bronze expired more than 3 years ago. Do I need to do the course again?
A: No, however if you let your SLS Bronze Medallion lapse for more than 3 years then SLSWA requires you to complete an "in-depth proficiency". This means that you will need to be assessed by a North Cottesloe assessor to determine your level of skill and knowledge. Should additional training be required this will be provides via a number of methods. This will ensure that your skills are in line with the current techniques and standards. You will need to complete the Online Theory and extended re qualification assessment.

Q: I have a medical background and other qualifications. Do I still need to do the course?
A: Yes, you will still need to do the course. You can speak to the Head Trainer regarding your prior learning or qualifications to see if you are required at every session. However, as the Bronze Medallion Course is focused on team work you will benefit from attending sessions even if you have a medical background.

Q: I have a Permanent and Limitating Disability and cannot complete the requirements of a Bronze Medallion. What can I do to be an Active Patrolling Member?
A: You may still be able to complete your Bronze Medallion. Contact the office to see if you can. If not, there are other opportunities and awards such as Radio Operators Certificate or Resuscitation Certificate which allows you to participate in Patrols.

Basic Patrolling Awards

Surf lifesavers undertake a number of roles including aquatic rescues, providing first aid and emergency care and providing surf safety information to the public.

The Surf Rescue Certificate is a stepping stone to the full Bronze Medallion that is generally the minimum standard required for full patrolling duties.

Course Prerequisites:

Minimum 15 years of age (on the day of final assessment)

Financial member of the Surf Life Saving Club

Complete 400m flat water swim in less than 9 minutes (signed off by an authorised member)

Course Fee: $305 ($255 for students)

Course Length:

Intensive course: 6 days (around 36 contact hours)

Long course - 6 weeks (around 40 contact hours)

Be able to swim 200m within five minutes (time to be signed by SLS qualified coach, SLS Trainer &/or Assessor)

Advanced Awards

After attaining a Bronze Medallion members are encouraged and supported to attend FREE training to expand their skillset on patrol.

The Advanced Resuscitation Techniques (ART) course teaches the principles of airway management, oxygen aided resuscitation, and major bleeding management.

The Patrol Captain is the leader of their patrol’s lifesaving functions on the beach and provides mentorship and support to their patrol.

A Gold Medallion Lifesaver has the advanced skills needed to rescue and provide emergency care – alone if necessary.

Powercraft

After attaining a Bronze Medallion members are encouraged and supported to attend FREE training to expand their skillset on patrol.

The Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Crew course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to effectively crew an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) in surf rescue operations

The IRB Driver is responsible for safely operating the IRB in the surf zone and managing the IRB Crew.

The Rescue Water Craft (RWC) Operator course provides participants with advanced skills and knowledge to effectively drive and manage a RWC (Jetski) in lifesaving operations.

IRB Driver (Minimum 2 years held IRB Driver Qualification)*
Recreational Skippers Ticket
Valid vehicle license with tow capacity

400M swim under 8minutes

Be at least 18 years of age on the date of final assessment

The Drones

The remote piloted aircraft (RPA) SLSWA Drone Patrol program flies ' Very small, excluded category RPA' by CASA classification.

SLSWA currently provides NC with a Phantom 4 drone with DJI software.

Getting in the air

The practical training (one session ~4.5 hours) you will complete up to 6 short flights including patrol surveillance flights and exercises in system failures.

After the practical training to complete your award:

You will also need to complete the GUS online assessment based on the learning modules.
You will need to complete 44 points of drone pilot/observer experience (you already get 6 points for your training flights). You can complete 3 mentored flights toward this off patrol (each ~15 min flight worth 4 points) and then the rest would be on patrol (each flight worth 6 pilot or 3 points observer).

SLSWA is responsible for providing access to GUS modules and assessment and the SLSWA drone portal with the drone log where you will be listed as a pilot. At present there is a delay in this occurring.

Join the Education team

Training officers inspire and educate other surf lifesavers by conducting entry-level and up-skilling training courses and SLSA awards.

Assessors support the high quality and nationally consistent assessment of specified Surf Life Saving awards.

Course Prerequisites:

A current financial member of a Surf Life Saving Club affiliated with Surf Life Saving WA

Candidates must be at least 16 years of age on the date of final assessment.

Note: Before you can train in an award, you must be proficient in the award in which you wish to deliver training and be endorsed as a trainer in that award by your state.

Terms and Conditions

Please be advised of the following terms and conditions for NCSLSC courses:

Cancellation of the course of more than 15 days prior will be fully refundable
Cancellation of the course between 2 and 14 days of the first session will be charged at 50% of the course fee
No-shows will be charged the full course fee, no refunds will be given

You may transfer to an alternative course should there be vacancies. The first transfer is provided free of charge however for second and subsequent transfers and administration fee of $50 will apply.
