Training Officer

Club training officers inspire and educate other surf lifesavers by conducting entry-level and up-skilling training courses and SLSA awards.

Prerequisites:

  • Minimum 16 years of age (on the day of final assessment)

  • Financial member of the Surf Life Saving Club

  • Completed a Child Safe Awareness Course

  • Hold the award they wish to train

Free for NCSLSC members

Pathway

For all WA TAF awards, a logbook is required to be completed. This provides evidence for the award Trained, assessed, facilitated and must be completed in detail, including comments where relevant by the probationary TAF’s supervisor/mentor.  Lesson Plans also to be included with the Probationary Trainer Logbook.

Learning outcomes

Being a trainer is a vital role in SLS. The trainer’s main role is to train members new skills in accordance with course criteria.  Trainers must:

  • Know and understand the course content and the assessment criteria

  • Maintain currency

  • Ensure the safety of all candidates and complete Risk Assessment forms for wet activities

  • Ensure water safety ratios are followed (Refer SLSA policy 1.01A)

  • Maintain good communication with all candidates, TAF and Head of Education


Assessment

Assessment is through demonstration, presentation and application of all elements of competency in the work-place. Participants will be required to complete activities that may include role-plays, oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations and performing scenarios.
